We Got a Soldier

We may have missed the boat on Moto Moto (Haynesworth) but the Bucs landed a true soldier when we traded for Kellen (The Soldier) Winslow Jr. Today. This is a good move for us.

How can we have people in power who see the end of the world as a good thing?

So Much For That

So it looks like Albert Haynesworth won't be stomping on any heads in a Pewter and Red anytime soon: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3939011

Moto Moto won't be clogging the middle of the Buc's D-Line anytimes soon. Dan Snyder strikes again.

The Bucs are a whopping 61 million under the salary cap, so here is to hoping that they begin adding pieces instead of continuing to remove them.

Clean Coal Clean

There is no such thing as clean coal. Period. I love you Mr. Obama but please stop repeating this lie to placate the coal lobby.

"Who's My Favorite Player?"

I would be lying if I said I was not suprised, disappointed, and sad that the Buccaneers decided to cut ties with 11-time Pro Bowler, and lifetime Buccaneer Derrick Brooks yesterday. Brooks was the type of player who you would forget was on your team because he did his job with such a quiet professionalism and was so good at doing it that you just grew comfortable knowing he was there.

"Who's my favorite player?"

The Buccaneers also cut ties with former Walter Peyton Man of the Year Warrick Dunn, for the second time yesterday. Basically it was a really sad day for me as a Bucs fan.

Take the time to watch if you don't know Warrick:

I Realize This Is An Odd Time

I am high on Penn State already. It is February. The Mets are playing their first spring training game of the year today, and I am thinking about Penn State Football. Weird.

I love about 1:00 into this video when Jermome Hayes (#5) Takes Jimmy Clausen's spoiled-ass head off.

Here It Is

Gov Jindal's enterance with an audible "Oh God" from what I assumed at the time was Keith Olbermann which is Hilarious. I was actually thinking the same thing as he made his Mr. Jindal's Neighborhood enterance.

Bobby Jindal (real name Piyush Jindal) which if I were a crazy right wing nut-bag would sound an awful lot like a Terrorists Name (you know, like how Barack Obama must be a Terrorist Manchurian Candidate because his name sounds like Osama) is a joke to me. Check his Wikipedia page and see some of his stances on social issues.

Actually, I'll do it for you, this is my blog:

Abortion and stem cell research
Jindal has a 100% pro-life voting record according to the National Right to Life Committee. He does not condemn medical procedures meant to save the life of a pregnant woman that would indirectly cause the termination of the pregnancy. In 2003 Jindal was reported to have stated that he did not object to the use of emergency contraception in the case of rape if the victim requests it. He opposes embryonic stem cell research[36] and voted against increasing federal funding to expand embryonic stem cell lines.

Same-sex marriage
Jindal opposes the legalization of same-sex marriage, and has voted for the Federal Marriage Amendment to restrict marriage to a union between one man and one woman. In December 2008, Jindal announced the formation of the Louisiana Commission on Marriage and Family, including individuals representing organizations that oppose same-sex marriage, including Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, Gene Mills, the executive director of the Louisiana Family Forum and Mike Johnson, senior legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund.

Civil liberties

Jindal voted yes on making the PATRIOT Act permanent, voted in favor of the 2006 Military Commissions Act, supported a constitutional amendment banning flag burning, and voted for the Real ID Act of 2005. Jindal has an "A" rating from Gun Owners of America.

Intelligent design
Jindal supports the teaching of "intelligent design" in public schools. Despite calls for a veto from groups as diverse as the the Roman Catholic Church, the ACLU, the National Review, and Jindal's own biology professors at Brown University. Jindal signed the Louisiana Academic Freedom Act in 2008.

Consider this my official endorsement of Jindal for the Republican Ticket in 2012. He represents every back-asswards social issue that Repbulicans are losing ground on.

Governor Jindal, Sean Penn has this to say to you:

And The Super-Terrific Republican Response

Consider Governor Jindal the Token Dark-Skinned Dude (Other than Michael Steele, the Token Black Dude) of the Republican Party. The annoying part of this clip is that it does not contain his enterance, which was brutal beyond measure. He sort of walked around the corner, with that weird smile on his face that led one to wonder what exactly he was doing off camera.

I actually laughed out loud during this. Good God I hope he and Palin run in 2012. Obama will shred these two.

President Obama's Address to Congress

For me this might have been his best moment so far. Following the Inauguration I have sort of tuned out National Politics. I have just trusted that he has got things taken care of.

Last night he was bigger than the room, bigger than himself but also able to joke with the members of Congress. I have never in my adult life-time experienced anything like this. I hate the "Clean-Coal" talk (for the record there is no such thing) but besides that he was incredible.

The best movie that I saw last year. An absolutely classic love story that renewed my faith in things in ways that are unexplainable. Eeev-a. Waalll-eee

New Features On The Head

So, I have already caught a ton of flack for this, but I don't care cause I happen to think it is cool.

To your immediate right (I know I said left before) you will see a widget from amazon.com. I will update this list from time to time with books/movies/toys and whatever else I am into at the time. I am hoping this feature is useful, I think it is cool.

You will also notice a new google search bar which I am hoping will be useful if something I write about sparks some curiosity and you need to search for it. There will also be advertisements that will change if you are interested in looking for something that is advertised.

I am hoping all of this new stuff is useful and not too much. What I don't want is for The Head to start to look like a billboard.

Let me know what you think.

Advertising?

So, "The Head" has taken a turn in a weird direction. We here at my head have gone all capitalist and added advertisements(you will notice them to your left).

This is an interesting little shift for us. If you click on them I make money. I am going to try to keep them relavent to what I talk about here, so that you are clicking on things that you would find interesting if say, you found what I care about interesting.

I am going to see what I can do about advertising book and what not that I am interested in. I thought this was a different little direction to take.

Let me know what you (both of you) think about this.

More Spring Training

Oh David, How do I love you.

(from Matt Cerone of Metsblog.com)

Spring Training

Those are my Mets warming up on the first day of full-team workouts. It is snowing here, but I am warm in my heart.

I thought the other day about how excited I am about baseball season starting (if you are unlucky enough to be involved in my fantasy league and have received multiple emails from me inviting you to join you know what I am talking about).

I thought perhaps that I am more excited this year than I have been in years past. Then I took the time to look back through the archieves of my Myspace blog (certainly an interesting trip, try it) and realized that this time last year, and the year before that, I said literally the exact same things. I read some stuff that I wrote in February of last year ('08) and I could honestly not tell you if I wrote it a year ago or last week. Eerie.

I don't know what it is about this sport, or spring training. Like I said I was reading my Myspace blog (www.myspace.com/terrygilmore1) and I realized that the seasonal depression, the anxiety, I felt the exact same things a year ago, exactly. I felt good in December, and progressively worse through January and into February until about this time, when the weather starts to get better and baseball starts. And I think I figured it out. There is a psychological thing going on here. My brain goes into hibernation in January and February, I am emotionally shut down by the weather and lack of sunlight, and start to feel anxiety (which I have recently)until the weather starts to break when I start to come out of it.

Spring training happens to coincide with this psychological cycle I am trapped in, so my brain sees spring training as the light at the end of its depressed, anxious tunnel. Pretty cool isnt it? I figured that all out on my own through a little self reflection and by reading back through what I have journaled the last few years.

Know Thy Self I guess.

She's Back!

Keep in mind that this woman was Re-Elected after calling for a Terrorist Witch Hunt in Congress on Hardball with Chris Matthews in October. Seriously Minnesota? Seriously?

A New Spring Tradition

This is becomming a bit of a spring tradition for me. Position players reported today, camps are open, Reyes is talking shit and I love it.

Shea Stadium Is No More

And with that the last of Shea comes down. I have to be completely honest and say that I never had a bond with the stadium like I do with Fenway. I have never been, and honestly am not all that sad I never did. Does that make me honest or a bad fan?

Famous For More Than His Wife

Brad Pitt is Awesome. Except Troy.

Pitchers and Catchers

I don't care about Alex. I don't care about Manny. I don't remember feeling this good going into a baseball season. Yahoo fantasy baseball is up and running. As are the Dirty Dozen. So prepare yourselves for many updates on how the Brawler's are doing.

and because I cannot find the actual scene:

I have done this in the past and I am going to announce once again, I have been known to be wrong about things.

That is a pretty big deal for me to admit too.

I can think of three specific instances where this has happened. My dad travels a lot for work. In the summer/fall of I think 2001 he came home from a trip with a new book in tow. It was some crap about a boy wizard or some other crap. I distictly remember a drive in the van with him where he was explaining to me and mom, as we looked with bored eyes, how there were only supposed to be three names to come out of the "Goblet of Fire" whatever the hell that was. He went on to explain in excited tones how a fourth name came out of the cup, and wait for it...it was Harry Potter's. At the time I remember thinking how absolutely stupid the book sounded.

He kept this up until November, when we as a family went to see "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone", and I fell in love with a bespeckeld 11-year old boy. I had read the first four books by Christmas that year. I was wrong.

The second instance of being wrong involves Chili. I was totally wrong about Chili being disgusting. My thinking was: "who the hell mixes meat and vegtibles?" I was wrong. Chili is delicious.

The third instance involves my brother, and is pretty similar to the big "Harry Potter" incident.

Drew is a fantasy "geek" and loves graphic novels and fantasy fiction. He had read a few fantasy series after he completed "The Lord of The Rings", which I thought was about a circus in middle school. He found that many of the more contemporary fantasy series out there failed to live up to the bar that Tolkien had set. Then he found one, "The Wheel of Time", which just sounds stupid.

At the time there were 10 books in the series I believe, and they were quietly the most popular book series in the world that no one had ever heard of. Drew flew through them and loved them. He informed me I had to read them. After much complaining and teasing of him for being a dork, I finally picked up "The Eye of the World" the first book in the series.

I found the first section of the book to be a little boring, a little confusing, and very much similar to the beginning of Lord of the Rings.

Then I began to fall in love with the characters (and there are an effing ton of them!) and the story telling. The action scences literally wash over you in a way that completely imerses you in the story. The imagery is incredible. And the books are really long.

It takes serious commitment to get through just one of them, let alone 11. The author died last year of a very rare blood disease prior to completing the series. Robert Jordan (the author) had Brandon Sanderson (the author of my other favorite fantasy series, "Mistborn") finish the 12th book which is scheduled to be released later this year. I have yet to finish the books that have already been published, mostly because I am lazy. Which brings me to the purpose of this long, boring post.

TOR books along with the Dable Brothers are releasing the series in Graphic form:

http://www.dabelbrothers.com/index.php?categoryid=16

I seriously could not be more excited about this. I have pictures in my head (and my brother's walls) of how I see this series, but to be able to read it in this form is going to be amazing. Well done.

I Am Totally In

I am totally in on this Joaquin Phoenix thing:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/chris-willman/joaquins-new-role_b_166546.html

This helps explain a little of what might be going on. And if it is true it is absolutely brilliant.

How Bizarre

Let me preface this by saying that I adore Joquin Phoenix as an actor.

I have anxiety disorder, when people are making an ass out of themselves on TV or in movies it makes me so uncomfortable that I have to look away. This literally made my skin crawl. Seriously.

Just a Quick Word

First post from my new blackberry. Seriously, is there anything better in the world on a rainy day than reading stories about Mets pitchers arriving in St. Lucie?

Why I don't Care About Alex

I just don't care about Alex. I love baseball. Pitchers and Catchers in 3 days 3 hours and 1 minute

Arod Slaps Balls

None of this matters to me. Call me crazy but I just don't care. I don't admire that he came out and said what he said yesterday. Had SI not reported on Saturday that he tested positive, Alex would have went on pretending like he never did anything wrong and that he is a victim in this scenario.

I watched the interview in it's entirety and he did not answer one question that we did not already know the answer to. All he admitted to was doing "Something" between 01-03.

When asked what he took he repeated a practiced line about "The Culture back then".

When asked where he got it he referred to "The Culture back then".

This was a weasley (I hate to use that term because it makes Ron look bad) way to apologize without ever saying exactly what he was apologizing for.

Alex continues to be a joke to me. All of Alex's problems stem from a psychotic need to always come out looking good. Every step Alex takes is calculated.

None of what came out yesterday was of any suprise to me. When I heard in the car on Saturday that he did this, I was not suprised in the slightest. The only thing that suprised me was that the information had come out.

To me no player that played the game from about 1986 the the present is beyond suspicion. I know that sounds cynical but for me there is no way to rationalize or justify saying a player absolutely did not take anything.

I didn't start watching baseball because Mark McGuire hit 62 home runs. I didn't care when Barry hit 73. I started watching baseball because I liked watching a 180 pound Short Stop fly from home to first on a dribbler to the third basemen, beating out the throw by an inch.

I started watching baseball because the sport is the ultimate blend of individual accomplishments and team work:

To me, players that have come up since about 2003 are under slightly less suspicion. They came through a minor league system that he strict testing policies and are a part of a generation (like me) who have a greater knowledge of what is and is not ok to put into your body. Alex used the "You could walk into GNC and get this stuff" line which is true to a degree, it is still however the responsibilty of the athlete who is making 252 MILLION DOLLARS over 10 years to know what is going into his body. Regardless of "The Culture".

I have my own list of guys who are absolutely guilty. Luis Gonzalez, Brett Boone, Andruw Jones I am looking at you. My guess is that it was more pitchers than hitters, and more fringe players trying to comptete with the big boys than it was super stars.

For now I will cheer my ass off for David Wright and his 33 Home Runs, and Jose Reyes and his 15. Chicks may dig the long ball but Terry digs the hustle double.

Two Weeks

Pitchers and Catchers in Two weeks.

It's gonna be a great year to be a Mets fan. I can just tell.

Taking a Stand.

I have been on the fence for far, far to long. I have gone back and forth, thought about it and debated it internally and vocally.

Today, as weird of a day as it is to say this, I am taking a stand.

Joe Paterno can stay at Penn State as long as he wants. I will love and support him. I will appreciate the wins and losses because when he is gone there will never, ever be one like him again. I regret that I ever wavered in the first place. Sorry Joe.

I love Joe and I continue to love Penn State football.

In Honor of the Superbowl

lets all take a moment to remember the greatest football player to ever don the helmet and shoulder pads. Every year I watch college football and the draft looking for the exceptionally fast, 250 plus pound fullback that can replace Mike Alstott in my heart and mind. To this point, no such person exists. Peyton Hillis of the Broncos thought he might make it, but I am not impressed. And Brandon Jacobs plays for the Giants so he is out.

So until that day, I'll just cling to my Alsott memories.

Awesome.

Enjoy the game. or Not.

The President's Weekly Address

I was crazy about this impersonation initially. I thought it was cheesy and kind of crappy. He has grown on me a little. There is more to satire than looking and talking like someone. Which is something that Tina Fey captured with her SaraCudda impression.
