Percy Jackson and the Olympians
It is not Harry Potter.
Nothing ever will be.
But it is good. It is written from a first person perspective, and he is funny. The books are full of references to ancient mythologies that I either forgot, or never learned, which is awesome. They are fun to read and I am really looking forward to the first film. It looks edgy and funny.

I'm getting tired of these empowerment fantasies. Here's the outline for *many* popular tales:
I. Main character just doesn't belong.
II. Main character discovers that they're special
III. Main character is taken to a place where others are like *them*.
IV. Main character learns that they are even specialer than the special people that are more like them.
V. Main character finds that only they are special enough to do what needs to be done.
VI. It helps if there's some ambiguous prophecy foretelling of someone so special who can do that special thing.
VII. Main character accomplishes special task with the help of not-quite-as-special side kicks.
ZZZZZZZZZ
I guess it's nice (if weak) to just dream that someday I'll be someone, not by fighting my way through *this* world, but by discovering that I'm just a super-special guy who doesn't belong in this unspecial world...
I suppose there is something attractive in the idea that although we may be poor, or an orphan, or lived in a cupboard under the stairs, there is a world in which we have the power to control the circumstances of our lives.
